My Day Hike Preparation & Pack List
I’m pretty new to this whole hiking/camping thing, and most of my knowledge so far has come from good ol’ Google. Part of my motorcycle vagabond lifestyle includes lots of time spent in the great outdoors.
It’s important to make sure you are somewhat prepared for disaster before embarking on a hike. I like my long hikes that take up to several hours, clear my head, and make my legs feel like jello! But there is always the risk of me getting lost or hurting myself, and being stranded out there, alone. With a Sasquatch. :O
Anyhoo, this is what I bring on my day hikes:
- Gregory 22L Backpack (designed for hiking)
- 100 spf Sunscreen
- 2 L hydration pack
- Extra water bottle
- Water (2-3L)
- Snacks, sealed
- Camera
- Insect repellent
- iPhone
- Water filter
- Emergency poncho
- Emergency blanket
- Knife
- Dog spray
- GPS with topographic maps
- Hoodie
- Ziplock bag
- HDD (it’s my life, I never leave it)
- Other valuables
- Wallet/ID
- Motorcycle keys
- Whistle
- Toilet paper
- Headlamp
- Battery pack
- Charging cables
- SAS survival mini book
I wear regular leggings and Doc Marten boots when I hike (they seem to do just fine!).
Since I live off of my motorcycle, I carry many important things with me. I usually leave my motorcycle and all my belongings parked at the trailhead, left at camp, or a safe place. Depending on the situation, I sometimes may take other valuables with me on the trail, even if it adds a bunch of extra weight. Hey, it’s good exercise!
I also notify either a parent or good friend of my location, how long my hike should take, and a number to call if they don’t hear from me by a certain time.
What do you take on your day hike? Am I missing anything important in my pack? Have you ever seen a Sasquatch? Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments below! 🙂
