11 Pros Of Camping In Cold Weather
I really don’t like the cold, but since I didn’t exactly have a choice at times (doing a long term motorcycle trip across Canada and all), I came up with a few reasons of why camping in cold weather isn’t actually so bad! 🙂 This actually started out as a sarcastic list…
1. No people!
If you enjoy solitude, you’ll like having the entire park or campground to yourself since most people don’t go camping in cold weather.
2. No mosquitoes or bugs!
This is absolute bliss! Nothing much else to say. You save money on bug spray, too!
3. An automatic free fridge!
Since it’s so cold, you can bring foods that would ordinarily go bad within a day (and store them up in a tree). It was awesome being able to start consuming things like milk and eggs. My diet got healthier and cheaper as the weather got colder!
4. You don’t stink as quickly
I was doing a lot of free camping at this time meaning that I didn’t get to shower often. If you’re not sweating as much, you don’t smell as fast! You just don’t feel as dirty and gross in general. And you don’t have to change as often. 😛
5. You now have more space in your motorcycle luggage
Since you’re wearing all your clothes now… meaning you have more room for… food?
6. You develop the amazing ability to hold in your pee
Well, if you’re a woman at least. Leaning up against a tree with your bottom exposed in the nippy cold is NOT FUN. Holding in pee is just so much easier. You get used to it. 😛
7. Finally, an excuse to stay huddled in your sleeping bag unproductively
Sleeping & giggling at memes on your phone for 12 hours… or cuddling with your significant other (or cat, or laptop).
8. A great excuse to drink lots of coffee!
It’s SO COZY! It’s just not the same in warm weather. #enablingcaffeineaddiction
9. Less Sunscreen!
I definitely don’t miss being a sticky, oily mess (with bugs stuck to me) after a day out in the sun, or being sunburnt after forgetting to apply sunscreen. During colder weather, you only have to worry about your face!
10. More sleeping and/or stargazing
During the beginning of my trip across Canada, I NEVER saw any stars. I was riding a little further north, so I went to bed while it was still light, and woke up to the sun as well! I personally loved the abundance of daylight, but many people have trouble sleeping when it’s still light out. Many people also love getting to see the stars at night. When camping in cold weather, you get more stars and sleep!
11. More Campfires
There have been times I had a fire going ALL DAY and ALL NIGHT (it was an emergency ok) while camping in cold weather in the rockies… so cozy. Teehee! You can’t really enjoy a campfire as much during a day when it’s sweltering out!
The list goes on…
